Interview with DJ Thundercut

Holding it down for Wantage, the Shire, is DJ Thundercat. You can find him spinning at the Cellar on the third Thursday of each month and serving as the production side of the duo DJ Thundercat and The Wise. He is a member of the Community League family, and sometimes lets everyone crash at his house. If your lucky, and are snooping around New Bedford, MA, you might even be able to pick up one of his stellar mixtapes at Solstice.

The future looks strong for Thundercat. Read more to learn more.

Whats gwain'?
Not much, at the day job.

Describe your production style.
Definately traditional, if you can call it that. 95% samples with a small amount of composition. I've always loved sampled beats, which is probably what got me into hip hop to begin with. Cypress Hill's hits from the bong blew me away with the Dusty Springfield loop way back when. Since then I've always favoured sampled beats, they have some much more feeling that all this clean electronic stuff, you know 'keyboard beats' as people call  them. But i take a lot of inspiration from producers i like but try and blend the bits i like about them into my own style, you know? I also try and steer clear of conventional samples and use more usual stuff.

What type of beat gets you hype?

I love tracks with hot drums, something which i strive for on every track i make myself. If it has insane drum prgramming, chances are i'll love it - see Dangermouse, RJD2, Shadow etc. plus almost anything from Premo. aside from that, just great use of good samples or creative melodies. i also love old funky records and that kind of stuff, i've lost count of how many times i've listed to Product Placement. i dont think i could really put my finger on certain things that make a track good to me tho - i either like it or i dont, like most people i guess, but as long as it bangs or is good smoking music, im there.

If you could produce for any rapper who would it be and why?
Tough question. off the top of my head i'd say Gift of Gab from Blackalicious. He's a sick individual for one but i think he could bless my beats and sound at home on one.

How many times out of 10 do you beat TWISE in proevo?
9 on a bad day! Nah, we're about even i'd say, although i think i have the edge on overall victories.

Who has the best boobs in the world?

My lovely lady friend, Susie of course! 2nd place to that fine pole vaulting chick on your pages though, great cans! Damn, she could definately vault on my pole ya mean?!

Famous Grouse or Bell's? Why?
Grouse all day - Bell's tastes like piss to me . My favourite of recent times has been Grant's although i like to go all over the whiskey map.

Do you prefer Terry Venebles over Sven?
Of course, I'm English, who doesn't?! Sven isnt really held in such high regard after the world cup fiasco although it's looking like his efforts will surpass 'Leave' McLaren's which so far have been dog shit.

Who is your favorite british boxer of all time?

Well I dont really follow boxing so i'd have to say the peoples champ: Frank Bruno!

After Colin Jackson, why has Wales been so crap at everything?
I dont know about that, they make people laugh with their accent and they gave us pot noodle, apparently. And Ryan Giggs.

If, in the future, your daughter became a Page 3 starlet, would you be upset?

Uhh, probably, yeah.

When will TWISE's low streak with the ladies end?

The question on everybody's lips! Ha ha! I dont know about that one, i'm sure he will bounce back soon. Maybe he's just waiting to be famous and get juiced by chicks everywhere?!

Better sandwich, Harvey's or The Paresien?
C'mon, dont insult me Pants! Paresien eveytime, tell a friend! Best sandwich in Oxford.

Pint of Old Rosie or Pint of Directors?
I've never actually had an old rosie but i have seen what it does to folk, definately looks like some next level shit! It was an intergral aspect of almost killing t-wise last summer which was hilarious but I'm not a cider man so pint of directors for me, ta.

Will there be a Thundercuts V. III
M
aybe one day, never say never, right? At the moment tho its all about the beats, getting them up to scratch, learing and trying to grow more, get better, so dont expect to see TC3 anytime soon.
